mad-bad-and-dangerous-to-know: Hydnellum peckii This is one very interesting and in my opinion beautiful fungus. It is inedible, mycorrhizal (symbiotic association between a fungus and the roots of a vascular plant ) species. Young, moist fruit bodies can “bleed” a red juice that contains a pigment known to have anticoaugulant properties - atromentin. It is found in North America, Europe, and was recently discovered in Iran and Korea. It grows in conifer woods among mosses and pine needle litter, usually as solitary fruite bodies. Here is one side photo   And  photo of an old fruite body that doesnt produce red juice any more
